BMI – Body Mass Index
BMI (Body Mass Index) is a measure used to assess the proportion of body weight to height. It helps determine whether a person has a healthy weight, is overweight, or underweight.
How to Calculate BMI?
BMI Formula:
- BMI = weight (kg) / height² (m²)
- Example: A person weighing 70 kg and measuring 1.75 m has a BMI of:
- BMI = 70 / (1.75)² = 22.86
BMI Interpretation:
- < 18.5 – underweight
- 18.5 – 24.9 – normal weight
- 25 – 29.9 – overweight
- ≥ 30 – obesity
BMI Limitations
While BMI is a simple tool, it doesn't account for differences in body composition, such as higher muscle mass in athletes. Therefore, it's worth supplementing the analysis with other methods, such as body fat measurements.
BMI is a useful indicator in health assessment, but it's not the only criterion – lifestyle and dietary habits also play a crucial role.
